A Happy Ending

Recently a shy beagle named Ty was adopted from The Buddy Foundation. Ty is very afraid of strangers but is comfortable when he is around other dogs.

Last weekend, neighbors on both sides of his house had BBQ's. Since Ty's favorite place to be is outside, his family spent most of Saturday outside. He did the normal play with the other family dog and watched people next door. At a safe distance of course. He got a little skittish as children ran around, but for the most part laid low in his favorite spot.

It was getting dark, and it was time for the family to go in. When he wouldn’t go in right away, more people started paying attention to him. Panic set in and he dashed. By this time it was nearly dark. The family immediately ran after him and tracked him visually for about what felt like an hour. It was almost 11pm when they were convinced there was nothing else they could do that night.

The family was on an emotional roller coaster for the next three days as they tried to find Ty.

Then Wednesday morning, the family’s other dog was startled awake by something. She gave out one bark, just enough to wake her mom. The bedroom window was open. It was still dark out, and a bit after 4 am. Mom thought she heard whimpering. The dog jumped off the bed and went for the back door. Sure enough. There was Ty sopping wet, his tail a-waging with whimpers of happiness. They had no trouble getting him to come inside this time. They dried him off, and checked for injuries. He could use a bath, but other then that seems to be unharmed.

Ty’s family is very happy to have him home!

Tips if your pet is lost

Per The Humane Society of the United States:
Make lost pet signs that are big, bright and brief. On fluorescent poster board, write “Reward” in huge letters at the top and “Lost Dog” (or cat) at the bottom. In the middle, tape a flier with a photo of your pet between two or three words of description. Post the signs in highly trafficked areas, and take the flier to every animal shelter and veterinary clinic in the area.

For more ideas to help find a lost pet, visit:

Also, if your dog gets haircuts, have photos of him freshly groomed and photos of him looking shaggy before he gets cut. You never know if you might need those photos.

New Faces

Annabell

Annabell is a white, Mai A Poo.

She is a bit timid in her new surroundings. This 5 year old little girl is looking for a home with lots of love and attention.

Scruffy

Scruffy is a 1-year old Lahsa mix.

Another photo of Daisy

Daisy Daisy

Daisy is a small, fawn-colored, Lab / Coon hound mix.
Daisy has come to the shelter a little nervous. She looks around a lot and one can only assume that she is waiting for her family to come back and tell her it's all a big mistake and they still love her. Perhaps your family has room it's heart to let Daisy know that she is still loved and will not have to worry any more about having a family to care for her.

Could my pet have allergies?

Excerpted from an article in this month's issue of Chicagoland Tails.

Chicagoland Tails is a free pet-related magazine found inside the front door of many local pet food stores and dog groomers.

When Sassy is the one sneezing
by Renee Krejci

Just because your four-legged companion doesn't curl up on the couch with a box of tissues doesn't mean he doesn't have allergies too. Approximately 20 percent of dogs and 15 percent of cats in the U.S. suffer from allergies. Unfortunately, pet allergies often go undetected because guardians don't know the signs. There are four types of allergies for both dogs and cats: contact, flea, food, and inhalant. Dogs can also have bacterial allergies. A common way to spot if your pet is suffering from allergies is if he or she is itching and licking a lot, often until the skin is broken or red. Some other symptoms are coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and mucus discharge. If you suspect your pet has allergies, take him to the vet. Your veterinarian may be able to perform an allergy test or recommend a veterinary dermatologist, who can determine the cause of your pet's itching and prescribe medication to control it.
